Today we met with members of the Parks Department trail crew to talk about plans for trail maintenance at Schmitz Park. It was a glorious day, a perfect time to visit this jewel of a park.
We had a wonderful time, poking around through the nooks and crannies surrounding true old growth, examining the current trail, and talking about planned changes.
But we also witnessed multiple examples of abuse to the park, caused by off leash dogs, and people not respecting environmentally critical and sensitive areas. We brainstormed about the best ways to keep the forest healthy, while maintaining access to the park for the public. It’s not an easy task!
Many thanks to the Parks Department for meeting with us, explaining their plans, listening to our concerns, and agreeing to work together to maintain Schmitz Park as a healthy natural area, a treasure for all to enjoy for a long time.
